GALLERY MONMA was founded in Sapporo in 2002 and has become an important platform for contemporary art in Hokkaido. In recent years, the gallery has expanded its activities through participation in art fairs both in Japan and abroad. Its program focuses on artists who pursue the essential nature of their materials and practices, transcending fixed interpretations and conventional frameworks.
In addition to introducing outstanding artists from Hokkaido to wider audiences, GALLERY MONMA organizes solo exhibitions by internationally recognized artists, providing inspiration and opportunities for emerging generations of artists. The gallery also plays an important role in cultivating the region’s cultural environment by creating a space where diverse artistic expressions can intersect and engage in dialogue.
Through its exhibitions, GALLERY MONMA actively embraces cross-disciplinary approaches and places importance on fostering meaningful relationships between artworks and audiences. Through ongoing collaboration with artists, the gallery presents new perspectives and values while exploring the possibilities of contemporary art in today’s society.
Rooted in the local context of Hokkaido while connecting diverse artistic practices from Japan and abroad, GALLERY MONMA creates opportunities for dialogue between artistic inquiry and public engagement. By moving between local and global perspectives, the gallery continues to present new possibilities for contemporary art.
