Established 1995 in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. In 2009, the gallery expanded its operations to two cities by establishing Minami Aoyama Room in Tokyo as both a viewing room and gallery. The gallery focuses on both the current work of living contemporary artists from Japan and abroad and the past work of artists who have passed away, organizing exhibitions, participating in art fairs, and acquiring artworks.
The gallery’s ongoing areas of focus are:
– The lineage of female artists from the prewar and postwar generations to the present (Katsura Yuki, Akutagawa Saori, Kusama Yayoi, Kinoshita Kazuyo, Tatsuno Toeko, among others)
– The lineage of printmaking practices that flourished in the 1950s–60s (Fukui Ryonosuke, Hamada Chimei, Ikeda Masuo, Minami Keiko, among others)
The gallery holds exhibitions at both locations centered on these themes. Among them, Kusama Yayoi has been a particular focus, with Sekiryu—serving as the artist’s hometown gallery—continuously holding solo exhibitions of her new works from 1999 through the 2000s, and continuing to handle a diverse selection of her works today. Beginning around 2020, the gallery has launched efforts to introduce emerging artists from both Japan and abroad—working in collaboration with them to discover, present, and promote new forms of significance on a contemporary timeline.
