We would like to present a selection of artists who delve into the contemporary reality and continue their research around the concept of “Superflat,” put forth in 2000 by artist and the owner of the gallery, Takashi Murakami.
The origins of Japan's postwar subculture seem to have developed as a means to swallow the discomfort of defeat and contradictions felt in the aftermath of the war.
“Kawaii,” “nonsensical,” “robots,” and other symbolic ideas are used in the world of manga, anime, and video games to weave complex, not necessarily heroic stories, which have gained worldwide sympathy.
The Superflat method is an abstraction of these myriad complexities, and we will be exhibiting a selection of contemporary paintings, sculptures, and multimedia works based on this method.
We will also feature a series of creative ceramic works that were born out of the aesthetic movement of "lifestyle crafts," that emerged against the backdrop of Japan's struggling economy following the bursting of the bubble economy in 1990.
