Gallery Utsuwa Nanohana opened 1998 in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The owner who runs 3 generation Japanese confectionery business in Shonan and Hakone region, is an enthusiastic art-lover, and that resulted in converting his private house designed by Yoshifumi Nakamura and opened a gallery as a place to introduce arts & crafts of his passion.
Its inaugural exhibition was done by Machiko Ogawa (ceramics), and followed by many then upcoming and later highly well known artists such as Taizo Kuroda (white ceramics), Ryoji Koie (ceramics), Koichi Uchida (ceramics), and Isaburo Kado (lacquerware).
In addition to pottery, the gallery covers wide variety of modern and traditional・antique art, including Michiaki Mochizuki (dyeing and weaving), Kansuke Fujii (painting), and Kasetsu (Japanese calligraphy). The gallery owns Yuichi Inoue’s collection, and holds his memorial exhibition annually to remember magnificence of his life and his artwork.
In 2011, aiming to expand the coverage to large size works, sculptures and installation art, the Hakone Nanohana Exhibition Hall was opened in Hakone Yumoto.
Taizo Kuroda passed away in 2021, and being a close partner and possessing large collection of his work, the gallery wished for wider platform to show and disseminate Kuroda's perspective and his artwork. Triggered by that desire, and looking for an opportunity to introduce our artists to Kansai area, in February of 2022, Gallery Kyoto Teramachi Nanohana opened in Teramachi, Kyoto.
The gallery’s 25th anniversary is approaching in November and our aspiration and commitment continues for art to all who love them.
