Counting from its predecessor, NICAF, the first contemporary art fair in Japan, ART FAIR TOKYO has been continuously held for more than 30 years, making it the longest running art fair in Japan.
Currently, galleries dealing in antiques, modern art, and contemporary art participate in the fair, and through approximately 3,000 works of art, share with domestic and international art players a view consisting of the diverse history of Japanese art and a place for open exchange.
In 1992, NICAF (Nippon International Contemporary Art Fair) was held as the first and first contemporary art fair in Asia.
Despite attracting the attention of major overseas galleries, the fair came to an end after its eighth edition against the backdrop of Japan's economic downturn in the 1990s.
In 2005, the fair was renamed “ART FAIR TOKYO” and reorganized as a fair that brings together antiques, modern art, and contemporary art in order to present Japan's unique cultural history and conditions in a more upfront manner.
Art Fair Tokyo 19 will feature 139 galleries from Japan and abroad, each presenting outstanding artists selected by the gallery owners and directors, with a total of over 3,000 works.
The exhibition includes a performance costume used by Yayoi Kusama in the late 1960s, color photographs taken by Daido Moriyama in the 1970s, a large-scale ukiyoe print of a tornado by Hokusai Katsushika, and other works of art historical importance.
As a place to examine, interact with, and collect art, the museum will meet the expectations of collectors and enthusiasts.
